Pipevine Swallowtail

I found a speciman in good condition. They can be quite challenging, because when they're active well, they're very 'active' as you know.. add some bright sunlight and black wings to complicate it all. Here my flash didn't quite fill as I would've liked, but there's some perceptable detail in the blacks.. Your thoughts? Go ahead, let me have itcool

F/14, 1/640th, ISO 1250, 5DM2, 300mm f/2.8 + 2x ext. & fill. Monopod for support.

Completely different look to this Pipevine, Howard. Yes, the Pipevine is in good condition as is the zinnia. Beautiful in every respect. No nits or suggestions. devil

Howard: I appreciate the degree of difficulty capturing these beauties so kudos for your patience and perseverance. This is a great reward for your efforts. 2 thumbs up! >=))>

It's a good catch on this Pipevine Swallowtail, Howard.  (Pipevines are rare around here.)  The touches of detail in the the dark areas of the wings work nicely.  It would be nice to see some hints of detail in the body just behind the head and the tops of the legs, but this looks very good as presented.

You must be pleased with this Howard. Apart from detail behind the head and part of the wing the lighting and detail is excellent. It must be very difficult to get everything right using flash on an active moving butterfly. Also there is the complication of black, white and colours to get right. Graham

Excellent composition. You got some good detail in the blacks and a wonderful pose.  Do they EVER stop moving their forewings?  Nice capture of a challenging subject.
