Hi everyone, sorry for being away for a bit, I have just returned from leading a 3 week photo tour to Brazil with NPN member May Haga and 5 other participants. It was a really rich trip for bird and mammal photography, I will be sharing a lot of images from it in the coming months. This is an Amazon Kingfisher that I managed to catch speeding by at our first lodge in the Pantanal, Pousada Piuval. Handheld from land.
Canon 5D3 500F4 1.4x 1/5000 F8, iso 800, evaluative metering -0.3, Av mode.

9 commentsExcellent, Nate. Nice wing position and great eye contact. Is the 5D3 still your go-to for the tropics?
Thanks Dennis, I still prefer the 5D3 by a bit over the 7D2 because of the great image quality and better iso performance. In Brazil I was shooting the 500F4 on the 5D3 and also I now have a 7D2 and Sigma 150-600 Contemporary that I used together when I wanted something lighter weight or I needed a zoom. But most of the time it's the 5D3 on the 500F4.
Nate,
The Kingfisher is wonderfully captured, but the sky colour looks a bit weird?
Hats off ! I have seen them fly and was never able to get a shot like this ! Well done !

Looks good Nate--I especially like the curl of the flight feather on the downstroke.........................Jim
Excellent detail/DOF and I like the close framing that shows off said details so well..
Especially nice look at the near wing primaries Nate!!
Thats an excellent capture of a fast moving bird Nate, and wth the 5d3, only 6fps I believe. Not easy to lock on to such a fast bird but the sharpness here is amazing. Graham
Welcome back Nate
!
Awesome flight capture of this beauty! Wonderful details!
I am eagerly looking forward to seeing more photos from your adventure in Brazil
Good wing position and nice job nabbing this one Nate, they are fast little birds and not easy. Looking forward to seeing many more images form your trip.
