A Hippo protects her very young calf in a great moment displaying pure affection. Image was taken from the photographic boat used on our Chobe Photo Safaris in Botswana.

9 commentsThis has to be seen large to be fully appreciated. Special moment of bonding for a species that we rarely see intimate moments from. The size difference accentuates how vulnerable the young are in the wild and how much of a presence is the parent in their life. I like that you included enough of the mother so as do dwarf the calf but that you didn't include her completely so that the calf is not too small in the frame.

Mario,
A very rare sighting indeed, normally mum would get beck in the water or run off,
Wonderful to see and even better to get a great image to share
Great techs n I can feel that loving touch!
A touch more room at the bottom will help.

Hello Mario, Great to witness and better to capture the intimate moment, Well-Done.
I really like the sharpness of the Shoulder on Mom and that specific area, showing excellent details, I think better detail than the head area with those Bright spots.
Thanks for sharing,

Excellent image with awesome light and good poses by both subjects.
Hi,
A little more room at the bottom will imprve the comp. Momma and baby are nice and sharp with a great pose.......................Jim
Wonderful shot Mario! As Ken said, it's so rare to see such a small baby hippo out of the water like that and you captured it nicely.
HI Mario,
High cute factor here, and I think the massive size differential between mom and calf is what makes this one work so well. I agree with pretty much everything Hisham said about this one, and I do like the framing and cropping as presented.
Cheers...
Brad
A sweet image IMHO. Good exposure, detail and pose. Thanks for sharing.
