Some stuff in front of my lens as you can see. This Cardinal dad & juvie are set back inside the shade of our myrtle tree..
You would be in the shade too, it's friggin' hot here right now ![]()
First time I've been able to catch this behavior up close.
F/5.6, 1/250th, ISO 1000, 5DM2, 300mm f/2.8 + 2x ext. No flash @ 8:04am
I brought up the birds selectively, added a bit of contrast to the juvies head also.

9 commentsHoward, I saw the feeding behavior and was sure that this was your's before I read the caption. Another great catch on Cardinal feeding behavior with fine clarity where it's most important. My comment on hot weather is that I prefer cold because you can always add clothes, but when it's hot there's a limit to how much you can remove....
Great point on the hot weather "when it's hot there's a limit to how much you can remove" Mark..
That's why when I'm shooting outside in shorts, I do quick dunks in the kiddie pool
What a great capture of this behavior. We have had a bit of a break from the heat this week but it's going to be steamy again starting tomorrow. Love these kind of shots Howard. Try to keep cool!
Hi Howard
The sharpness is where is counts, on the feeding. Nice job.

It makes me feel as if I'm peeking through a hidden camera looking at them. I really like the point of view and the sharp image of the birds the the framed OOF greenery. Nicely done! My brother lived in Austin for a while and I went down there several times to see him. I know you are not too far from there. So I know what you mean about the heat. Great place (minus the heat).
Hope you're staying in the shade to shoot these, Howard. Excellent job sneaking the pov through all the foreground stuff and nailing the focus on the birds.
What a nice moment you've caught here Howard, outstanding! Ray
Great behavior capture! A very nice intimate view of this pair Howard.
Sweet One
Very nice, only I find the oof leaves at left side slightly distracting.
