Fresh out of the nest. I don't know how long this bird had beenout, it looks just fresh, but when it finally got tired of me and flew away, it took off like a veteran and was last seen several hundred feet away. I liked the fluffy plumage and the odd patch on the head that mimics the lichen in the perch.
This was taken with a new lens for me. I was looking for a good lens that was light enough for travel and hiking and yet had sufficient reach. I'd been impressed with the reviews and images I'd seen from the Sigma 100-600mm Contemporary lenses so I ordered one and I've been extremely pleased with the image quality thus far. I won't post it because the composition is lousy, but I took some shots of a male and female Purple Martin against a blue sky and there was almost no fringing. Focus apprears to be spot on out of the box, though I bought the dock to allow easier adjustments if desired.
7Dii, Sigma 100-600mm contemporary, hand held sitting in a camp chair, f/6.3, 1/320, iso 640, 600mm. Processed in LR5 & CS6. Cropped to 5.8 MP (over a 70% crop) from a horizontal original. Some tweaking with Topaz Detail on the bird. Taken July 19th at 6:06 am in my backyard.
Thanks for alll the comments on my last Rufous Hummingbird image, and I look forward to hearing from you on this one.
Please look at the larger image for better detail.

3 commentsDennis, this looks like a baby chick
and I guess it is. I would never have guessed what kind of bird it is. It sure doesn't seem like it could fly though. Nice detail and b/g. Hope you continue to enjoy the new lens.
Dennis,
This is a nice plump one.
Nice to see your new lens is working well.
The early morning light on the chick is really nice. Good catch. I'm very interested to find out more about the new lens. At 4 pounds, it is a lot easier to use than the 500 or 600, not to mention the price point. This image is tack sharp considering the crop.
