Evening Light

Spring time along the Gooseberry River in northern MN. always seems special with lots of water flowing, and the sounds are just as special. I have shot the falls along this river many times but always really enjoy the spring. This is the lower of the three main falls at Gooseberry Falls State Park just a short distance before it flows into Lake Superior. The evening light really attracted me to making this composition. Thanks for looking and any thoughts.                                                                                               Canon, 24-105L @ 65mm, ISO 100, F/20 at 0.4 sec.

Wonderful job. I can hear the roar. Morning light is a great touch as well.

That's a great looking falls, Nick, and the late light on the far slopes add some fine warmth.  I also like the big curve of white water that leads back to the falls.

The light on those trees is incredible. Very peaceful and quiet image, even though I know that waterfall had to be quite loud.

Good capture on the light. The river leads me right to the falls which is perfectly placed.  Nice feeling here.  How far is this from the Boundary Waters?

The light on the top half sets the scene up beautifully.

Thanks a lot guys! Appreciate your comments.

David, It is probably around 75 miles or so to the beginning of the Boundary Waters area and Ely MN. From Gooseberry Falls I would stay on Hwy 61 along the lake to Hwy 1 which is just above Silver Bay. Then it is just over 60 miles to Ely and a pretty cool drive. I have seen moose along that road different times. Thanks, Nick

A lot to like with this one! The soft light, the swirls in the water, the waterfall itself. Very neat indeed! I am playing with the thought of cropping a bit from the darker left side (1/10 or something like that), to put more emphasize on the gorgeous light in the distance, but not all sure that would be an improvement.

Wow, I can see why you keep going back!  The way the evening light hits the gorge above the falls is just fantastic.  The power of the spring flow really shows with this shutter speed and the mist at the base of the falls.  Your POV showing the curve of the river is a fine touch, too.

An impressive capture for me, Nick. I enjoy to follow the mighty flow of the cascade to the more calm part in the foreground, then the fantastic lighting in the upper part pulls my attention to the top again. Great sense of scale to me, too.

Nick, truly one of those images that really must be seen in the larger version here. As most have mentioned the light is perfect and is the key to bringing out the best of this scene. The ability to enjoy the dynamic range here is impart to that wonderful evening light too, heck, the composition is just super also.......enlightened

HI Nick,

I love the light on the top part of the tress, and the light really adds the extra bit of depth to this image. The image is framed up very nicely with a nice curve into the falls, and the sense of scale is well portrayed in this capture.

Beautiful Work

Beautifully composed and processed, Nick. I really like the water action, and the light peeking in from behind the trees. Well seen and executed!

The variation in water color in the falls is nice! I really like the surrounding color and light above too.

What a beautiful light! I like the shutter speed used, the angle of view bringing out the falls in the evening light under these colorful rocks. I love it. Well done.
