This Double-crested Courmorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) posed nicely as Mike Ramy and I motored slowly past in Mike's boat while we explored Florida's Silver River last March.  While it looks like he's giving us "what for", it's really because he was hot.  Birds (like dogs) pant to cool off on hot days and it was approaching 90F on this early spring day.  (5D3, 400mm f5.6, 1/500s, f/8, iso 1600, tripod, cropped off the top to an 8.5 x 11 frame)

So, Mark, how do you manage to have an excellent image of each and every WC theme? This is an excellent capture of this courmorant. Love the blue eyes and mouth and the overall pose against the nice bg. devil

Scott,  I attribute my ability to participate in so many weekly challenges to two factors.  First, I have always been a generalist with wide ranging interests.  That was true in my scientific career and holds in my hobbies as well.  In photography, I've long claimed that I'll photograph anything that doesn't move and with Mike's Ramy's "pushing" I've even started trying to photograph things that do move. cool Second, I shoot a lot, over 20,000 shutter presses a year.  That presents lots of learning opportunities with images that are "close" but leave me saying "If only..." or "Next time, I'll..."

Nice Cormorant shot.  Their eyes have an interesting color and contrasts nicely with the yellow face and chin.  I've never seen into the mouth and had no idea they had a blue (?)palate.

Mark, this character is a bit prehistoric in stature. The look he gives at least leaves me in that thought pattern. Amazing the colorful blue eyes, and throat area......I might give him a wide berth from his intimidating stare.....frown

Wow! The brilliant blue eyes and interior of it's mouth make it look like some kind of alien creature!  Nice capture, especially for floating by in a boat, Mark!
