I haven't posted in quite some time but since retirement I hope to be able to participate more. This was taken in my backyard this afternoon.

A nice catch. Like the pose and the bit of food in the beak.
The image has very strong flash look to it. Noted that you had the 580EX II at 1/2 power. Using E-TTL and dialing in -2 (or so) flash compensation would provide a much more natural look.

Thanks for the help. I am sort of winging it. Tomorrow I will try the settings you suggested and see what happens.

LeRoy, I agree with Keith on the flash, but the subject is well framed and positioned. It really pops out of that mottled dark background.
It is nice to be retired; every day is Saturday, except Sundays. And Doctor appointment days. And volunteer days. And yard days. And chore days.

Lots of color here, for sure, in both bird and tasty tidbit. Nice catch/good timing. Good looking results of flash, too; nice you could use 1/2 power. Beautiful shot.

Detail looks pretty good and you got a great pose LeRoy. The larva is a nice bonus. I think I'd back off on the flash quite a bit. The image is obviously flashed and usually the object of fill flash it to make it unobtrusive. I don't use it very often, but those that do usually seem to use flash compensation and set it at -2 to -3 stops.
