From Kodachrome Basin we headed east towards Capitol Reef NP, down the infamous Burr Trail, north on the dusty Notom Road to find some dispersed camping along Sandy Creek on BLM land just outside the park's eastern boundary. Set the tent up next to the truck about 25 feet above the creek along some cliffs. Looking down there the next morning to lots Porter-esque comps of trees and brush just barely awakening into spring. I liked the subtle color and the arching tree canopy. Best seen large of course.

15 commentsOh now this is beautiful. This is imaginative. This to just the sort of image we need, a personal look of nature devoid of mighty cliffs, skies, and waterfalls. I like this very much. Good seeing on your part. How refreshing to see something like this at NPN.
P.S. I would tone down that green in the center to the level of the greens just below it. It clashes a bit with the rest of your color scheme.
Quite beautiful, Dave. Great earthtones and sweet composition.
D.A. Real nice image. Looks like something I would shoot.
Nice job on this, Dave. Looks like so many places and that makes it very appealing to many. Would not have guessed that it was along the Notum Road at all.
Well seen and taken, Dave. Beautiful light and color, and a very appealing image.
Very artistic, Dave!! Before reading the descrption I guessed Capitol Reef ....
This is really nice Dave! Looks almost painterly with al those nice colors and shapes. Really well seen and executed!
Beautiful composition. Love the tones and textures.
Wonderful image, Dave. Like the framing, the pockets of lights and the brittle earth tone layers. Well done.
I love the quiet beauty here Dave. No screaming colors, just a wonder maze of pastel colors and complexity of nature. This also has a very painterly look. Well done.
Hi Dave,
This is a wonderfully intricate image of nature with beautiful subtle colors. I really like the painterly like feel you have achieved with this capture, and just seeing this scene is beautiful. I might slightly crop down fro the top, but that is very minor stuff. ]
Beautiful work
Congratulations Dave. Told you this was a winner. And you didn't even have to leave your campground.
Dave: I must admit I was underwhelmed by the thumbnail but intrigued by the gallery version and completely delighted with the large version. Wonderful color palette and details galore. Good vision; good photography. Congrats on the WP. >=))>
Congrats on a well deserved WP. Like Igor said, this demonstrates the quality of the photo is in the hands of the photographer...and not required is an "epic" or "trophy" composition that seems to be prized by all of us.
Congrats Dave! This is really nice and I totally enjoy the look and feel it has. The light and colors are wonderful and you did an excellent job with the composition. Cheers!
