I photographed this grebe as morning fog was lifting over an impoundment at the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. One question that I have is would it be preferable to remove the bright highlights from the bird's plumage or leave them in. K5 IIs 300mm f4 (1/3200sec at f6.3, ISO 400) Thank you..................................Jim

5 commentsThe best Pie-billed grebe photo I have seen. It is excellent is all respects-until you mentioned the highlights, I was not detracted by them.. However . . . .. With a couple removed I think this is near perfect.
Exposure looks great -- highlights dont bother me -- Grebe is sharp -- maybe some straightening -- looks like hes swimming a bit downhill
Jim: this is a wonderful shot as is. The highlights you mention are only slightly noticeable when the photo is viewed large and are not a distraction. The Cornell bird site lists them as part bird, part submarine, so seeing some water drops on them is to be expected. Richard
Jim, I think this is a great photo of the PBG. I wouldn't touch the highlights.
Hi Jim: Beautiful shot of the Grebe. If I were processing this one, I suspect I'd remove the one highlight in the middle of the body and leave the rest-that's the only one that pulls my eye in.
