I took this image quite some time ago (in 2007) while on a trip with Jasper Doest to Spitsbergen. The terns had their breeding colony in the harbor of Longyearbyen and I remember being on my belly for about 4 hours with my head lower than my feet trying to capture the mating ritual of this pair of arctic terns. He was feeding her shrimps for a long time and I remember she turned him down anyway. I feally felt sorry for this little guy.

7 commentsThis is a very nice behavioral image. I like the poses of both birds.
Assuming you shot this in RAW, it would be very helpful to go back and pull more detail out of the black heads, espeicially the eyes. I am not able to make out the eye in the left bird at all, even in the larger image.
Great interaction, Betty-Lou, and I love the composition.
Ditto what Keith said - under good conditions it can be hard to see the eye from a black mask --
Nice moment captured and I like the composition you chose. I agree with Keith concerning the blacks, I think the image would be improved with just a little more detail brought out in the blacks.
Thanks for your comments. I did take the image in RAW and I tried to get some more detail in the blacks, but as I mentioned this image was taken in 2007 with a Sony Alpha 100, which didn't have the quality of the cameras of today, so this was all I could do. What do you think?
Nice and delicate moment, pressed at the right time. Keith's suggestion is worth following up ! Cheers, Hans
Beautiful Betty-Lou - love te way you've framed this
