Burrowing Owl at Zanjero Park -- Gilbert, Az

1/3200 at f8 and ISO800
Canon 7D Mark II
Canon 500mm with 1.4 TC

High shutter speed as I was hoping for an owl flight shot -- when this opportunity came up and I forgot to change. Was thinking that f8 would be enough to carry DOF to the back owl.

Interesting image. The owls really pop off that black background. A little more DOF would have been nice, but the second OOF owl does make the image more interesting IMO.

It looks like you had these guys inside for a family picture. I love the eyes. It would have been nice to have both of them in the focal range, but I agree with David in that the one behind adds interest; as if he photo-bombed the other owl.

I also find this interesting Scott, but agree that a bit more DOF would have been prime here. I still love the concept and image.

I like this, and I'm quite happy with the DOF you used. I think it adds to image. Nicely captured.

Well done, Scott. I like the composition a lot and the techs look very good. Dof with that much lens gets very difficult. If you were at 50 ft you'd theoretically have about 5 inches to play with which means the rear one would have to be almost against the front bird and you'd have to use your dof preview to adjust the focus so the focal point was behind the face of the front bird. That said, for this composition, I like the rear bird being a bit oof.

Neat shot Scott, I think it works well despite the back bird not being in sharp focus. People routinely underestimate how much depth of field you need to get 2 birds sharp when they are not on the same plane, you probably needed something more like F16 here. :toast:

Interesting composition.  I like the angle on the two birds and the slightly oof owl behind gives the shot more depth.  Well done.
