This afternoon I had a little bit of time to check out my new lens (Nikon 80-400). It was windy and mostly overcast so I wasn't to optimistic about finding things but I was lucky to get a handful of horned grebes (including 1 in breeding plumage) right off a public dock. A little bit of lucky helped me get this shot

Nikon D7100 80-400mm VR @ 400 HH
f/8
1/320 (love that VR!)
ISO 800

Cropped 25% off the left side, processed in LR5 and CS5

I certainly would be happy to fin this as well Luke. Nice job getting the head turn. I like the water color and the ripples add some interest. I do this the color feels a little washed out. If mine, I might bring up the shadows a bit, add back seem contrast and saturation which will also bring out that red eye a little more. Still a nice image. Hope you are liking your new gear. Looking forward to seeing more from you with that lens.

Like the red tear near the eye -- good job on holding the detail in both whites and blacks

Very nice as posted. Nice getting close. I especially like the alternating tones of the curve in the bow wave.

Luke,
Nice shot. Sometimes we overlook the shot of the bird heading away with the head turn. Love the colors. :toast:
