Jungle Owlet

It's a good thing I love owls. My recent India visit was devoid of good tiger photo opportunities, but I did have good luck with the owls. I saw four new species, including the Jungle Owlet. This individual was initially perched on a power line, but then flew back onto a much more natural perch as we were exiting the park at the end of the day.

I like the head turn you got on this one Max. I do like the comp, but also feel like the very large perch over powers the owl a little. I wonder how this might look cropped much tighter than this (mostly getting rid of the thicker part of the tree trunk)? I think I might feel differently about it if there was more of a color and contrast difference between then owl and the tree.

Well that's cool, Max! What a sweet-looking little owl! OK, he does look a bit fierce as well. Nice comp and great perch with a killer look at you (I like the over the shoulder stare showing off his back plumage). The claws are a bonus.

Kind of funny, but on the thumbnail page the shape of the perch and owl looks a little like a heron body and long neck with the head looking straight at you, not unlike the one posted shortly after this! Utterly unhelpful and irrelevant comment, but I actually thought that the first time AND a few hours later when I revisited the Avian gallery and forgot I had already corrected my initial impression! Yikes...getting old both on the eyes and memory fronts! (In my defense, the thumbnails are a little small on a smartphone screen!)

Nice catch Max, love them as well ! Perch is a little chunky for the bird, but other than that a fine image ! Wish it were mine  , Hans

Thanks guys. Kurt, I see your point. Unfortunately, I fear in this case the image quality would suffer a bit if I cropped in too much. Plus, I do think it's somewhat appropriate that the owl looks tiny compared to its perch, since it's a tiny owl.

I did ask my driver to reposition us slightly to get a cleaner background. Otherwise, there would have been larger patches of clear sky creating more distractions in the background.

Nice Max, I would agree with the smaller crop but not at the cost of lower IQ. Well done as is!
