Nestled in Green

Here is another image taken on the Big Island, just a few days ago. This area is nice and quiet, with great views and fortunately not too far from where I live. This island is amazing how diverse it is, and if you drive the perimeter, you'll see desert, tundra, and tropical type landscapes, plus everything in between. As for this particular area, I enjoy the rich green grass, miniature bonsai style trees, and views of Mauna Kea (a recent storm had brought snow to the highest elevations), Kona, and the ocean.

This little scene stopped me in my tracks, with the combination of back-lit, vibrant foliage, and a tree that had the appearance of being quite large, yet in reality stood maybe twelve feet tall. Very unique, at least to me used to large Cottonwood and Pine trees scattered about Colorado.

I'm guessing it is hard to tell this from looking at this image without being there in person, but far in the background is the ocean, just above the bush on the right hand side of the photo. Because of the partially overcast conditions, the light cast shadows across the ocean, creating a spotted blanket of water out on the horizon. This area being, I'd estimate, 3500'-4500' above sea level, it offered great views of the sunset.

As always, I appreciate any comments and suggestions for improving the images here. Thanks for looking!

Really excellent and pleasurable, apart the great white marks ( but this is a problem of mine, I do no not like them).
All the best,

Beautiful big (little) tree, Nathan. My only nit would be that it is a little tight on the left side of the tree. Perhaps you didn't have a clear place to end the shot. Regardless the greens are very nice and the tree does have a cool ancient bonsai look.

Very nice image, Nathan, lovely light and textures in the grass foreground and shrub. Sky on the right is a little too bright for my taste but still a winner. Would have liked to see the full branch on the left side too.

Thanks for the comments; much appreciated. I will revisit the right part of the sky... I was disappointed that I could not include much more on the left side of the tree, but doing so would include some "messy" foliage and a fence (if memory serves right). Next time I am walking around that area, however, I'll look and see if there are other options not cramming the left side. Thanks again, everyone.

The tree is an absolute beauty and I can see why you took this photo. Unfortunately, the bright part on the right is drawing my attention away from the tree, which is a shame. Maybe crop out that part, or burn it?? But a beautiful picture nevertheless!

Excellent textures and variations in light and shade. The composition hangs together so strongly - you've given this intimate scene a real presence !!

This is a beautiful scene and you captured it really well. I love the colors and the dramatic looking sky. My only small nit that it's a bit tight on the left sinde of the tree...but it's no big deal. You did a good job here

Here's a repost with the sky darkened and with added contrast to the top right. Any better?

The repost looks great Nathan and wonderful textures and detail through the scene. A very peaceful scene and a very nice job on this.

A very beautiful scene expertly captured, Nathan. I love the rich greens, and you have a nice combination of interesting elements. I'd be tempted to try to get down closer to those grasses to make them a more prominent foreground element, but then you'd probably lose the ocean. Definitely a beautiful image and place worth exploring in depth. :toast:

I love it Nathan. The dark clouds set an ominous mood, the strong tree nested in the warmly lit greens. Excellent compositional flow to this.

Nicely done.
