Fire and Ice #3

We've had lots of ice, but very little sun over the last couple of weeks, so I was excited to catch this sunburst in the ice around my pond's waterfall. When I came inside and saw the original horizontal image, I knew I needed to go back, get closer and set this up as a vertical. However, in that 15 minutes, the flowing water had washed away the ice, :frown: So I'm left with only this major crop and some mixed feelings about the complexity of the view in the non-burst areas. I would definitely appreciate your thoughts especially on the crystalline areas. (5D3, 100mm macro IS, f/10, 1/125s, iso 400, tripod)

The details (and this is mostly about details) are best seen in the large version.

Like the close comp/crop, and the colorful 'burst' grabs the viewers attention.. no doubt
It works just fine Mark, plenty for the eye to feast on.
Isn't that what macro's about? :toast:

I think this works really well, Mark! The complexity in the top flows nicely to a more simple lower half, where the drop and the sunburst are the stars. I'm also very intrigued by the colored sunburst, I've never seen that before. Really nice detail!

This works for me, Mark - the sunburst is a real eye catcher that draws my eye away from the top of the image. All I would suggest is some vignetting to darken the top a bit, but I'm not sure that would really help - this works as is for me.

I've never seen such a distinct, multi-colored starburst as this one, Mark. Wow.

Roel, sunbursts occur at very specific angles between the camera, the ice, and the sun and I'm pretty sure that they require a layer of liquid water on the ice. A small subset of those give color starbursts. This is the most colorful sunburst that I've managed to catch.

Unique and fascinating shot. I like the complexity of the top and the simplicity of the bottom half of the image, and that sunburst is really amazing. It's fun looking for the smaller, less colorful ones in the top of the picture.

I especially love the blue edge on the water droplet. It feels like a shot of a rather colorful sun rising over the blue planet from space when focused on that area..

Beautiful as is, Mark. Great colors in the main sunburst and nice job bringing out the echoing sunbursts in the crystalline mass.

Amazing colourful sunburst, Mark! The green line in the droplet adds much interest. I also like the sparkles and high lights in the upper areas. A pure delight to view.

This is quite beautiful Mark. Of course the sunburst is spectacular, but I also really like the ice above it. Very nice detain and texture. And the black backgrounds sets it all up nicely. Well done!
