Long Shadows - Abstract

by Harley Goldman

Gallery: LandscapePosted February 4, 2015233 views9 comments
I was drawn to the shapes, lines and shadows running through this. It is intended to be quite abstract. I am not too sure how well it will appeal to most folks??

This is from Death Valley NP.

Comments, critiques and suggestions are always welcome.

Really nice lines and texture, Harley. This works well for me. May not be an improvement, but I might try cropping up a little from the bottom to give more emphasis to the nice lines above.

I don't see it so much as an abstract composition, but rather as a beautiful rendering of a desert landscape (I'm guessing Death Valley or somewhere else in the Mojave?) B&W works, and the long focal length really makes the picture for me. :toast:

This is different for sure, but I like it. The angular ridge and shadow are a nice contrast to the curving drainage lines. Great eye as usual Mr Harley.

Not what I normally think of from Death Valley. I do like the abstract quality and strong lines. Maybe some added contrast in the midtones to brign out textures. I'm seeing some odd stroke mark it appears in the shadow of the hillside, at least tht is what I think it is - visible on small and large version. Maybe the erasure brush? Caught my attention and created an un-even shadow.

I like this a lot, Harley. Very graphic in nature. The angles and the dark shadow contrast nicely with the curves in the background. Just a thought, but you might try brining up the bright lights just a bit, although this looks fine as it is.

I like the serpentine lines in the upper part of the image most. I'm sure the image quality is great as usual, but like you said, not sure how well this will appeal to most folks. Not sure I should even say because it is purely a personal taste kind of issue. It's just not my thing. Maybe I need to expand my way of seeing, and thinking some!

I always love shadow plays in the desert environment, this is no exception, if this image was one of mine, I would crop some of the bottom and
crank the luminosity and contrast to the max. :toast:

I agree with the suggested crop from the bottom. The bottom portion is front lit which gives it less texture than the rest. If those closest bushes were well defined like, say, the ones on the hill the image would be better. So the crop would not be to improve the composition but to remove a section that had unflattering lighting.

demi-abstract (but also full natural) composition, to capture some ever-fascinating patterns.
Excellent and clear idea, and rendering at the same level, with a rich modulation of tones. Contrasted but also rich in mid tones, and great sharpness.
All the best,
