Out on a Limb

This was not taken in a zoo. After three months trekking alone through the jungles of Borneo, (well, not exactly alone, I did have my porters, just the twelve of them) I came to a clearing where this little monkey was sitting sunbathing in a small patch of bright sunlight within the darkness of the dense jungle. My supplies were down to my last Darjeeling tea box and two Jacobs cream crackers. Afternoon tea would have been unbearable in another day and even the silverware was becoming tarnished in the dreadful humidity of the place. And the porters were beginning to revolt. Things were grim. But the insouciance of this small creature took my breath away and enlivened the ugly mood of the porters long enough for us to reach the river and safety. I was fortunate indeed to have whipped my trusty old D90 and grab-shot him at 200mm. Hand held 1/80th at f5.6.

Welcome to NPN, Peter! An outstanding beginning. I get the impression from the quality and composition of this excellent offering that you are not new to the experience in general and composition in particular. The light, eye contact, detail and balance are outstanding. The tiniest nit I can pick is the blown highlight in the background, but it is probably the source of the back lighting on the monkey. Just excellent! I look forward to more of your work.
Besides, anyone who can use the word "insouciance", and spell it correctly. can't help but do things well!

Thank you for such a kind welcome Phil. I'm not really a nature snapper just a general snapper, dipping his toes gingerly into the sea of breathtakingly good images to be found on NPN. (You have some lovely images in your portfolio and the Cedar Falls image I feel is particularly delightful) The site was recomended to me by a twitcher friend (or should that be a friend who twitches?) who I now discover annoyingly isn't on the site. As to this shot, now that you've pointed out that blown area, it is really annoying isn't it? Damn and blast. I never like cloning out parts of pictures but in this case it might well be for the best. I think a nice cup of tea is needed.

Very pleasing photograph. Great expression on the monkeys face. You handled the light very well. To bad you did not take this as a vertical so more of the monkey's tail showed. Welcome to NPN. Thanks for sharing.

Welcome to NPN Peter :wavey: What a wonderful photograph to come away with to illustrate your trekking adventure. I love the way the light is illuminating the monkey. The moment you captured here in the beautiful jungle seems very serene. I would be very tempted to remove the bright spot if it were mine.

Awesome Photo!!!

Wonderful photo Peter, and that sounds like quite an adventure! The bright spot doesn't bother me too much, though I'd probably clone it out as well. I'm really curious about that trip, was it just something you wanted to do?

Thanks to all for the welcome, while it's true this is a wild animal in the Borneo jungle, I may have exaggerated the adventure just a little tiny bit.

Hello Peter

Welcome aboard ! Great adventure into the Jungle, I am sure?

Wow, amazing lighting on the face area, Well done ! There are a few bright spots that could be toned down to improve the overall representation!

Cheers

The subject is nice, but it is the lighting is what makes this image. The face of the monkey just seems to glow. Great image. I do agree about removing the bright spot in the upper left.

Love the quality of the lighting, and I especially appreciate the warm light on the face. Too bad about the hot spot...and that can be easily removed in post. I would also try to selectively lower exposure on the hair at top of head. Oh yeah, the illumination on the right side leaves is perfect for effect. Thanks for sharing this capture. It is well worth some careful processing to maximize its quality.
