Yellow Jacket Worker

Another shot from this fall. When cold, they lose their aggressive behaviors and are quite approachable. Yellow jackets often do not make it back to their nest and will sleep at their last destination before sundown. This one lost one of her antennae, undoubtedly removed by one of my honeybees during a hive raid. K5 IIs, 180mm f3.5 (1.30 sec at f16, ISO 400) Topaz Detail, TK's sharpening for the web................Jim

Absolutely impressive detail, Jim, complemented by wonderful colors. I'll take your word regarding their friendliness when cold, though.

Impressive magnification and detail, JIm. In addition to the good view of the wasp covered with dew, I like the detail and pattern in the bud, and the nice green bg. I agree with you that chilly fall mornings are a prime time to photograph not just yellow jackets, but insects in general as they are often either immobile or very lethargic and covered with dew, as here.

Excellent catch, Jim. The details in the bud and the wasp are great with the dew drops adding a fine frosting to the cake.
