Canon 1D-X, 500mm f4, handheld
f4.5, 1/400, ISO2000

Just starting to move to breeding plumage, with the red wash beginning to appear in the chest. A heavily overcast day so a wide aperture and little depth of field.

60% crop. Selective sharpening to bird.

C & C, please. Thanks for looking.

I really like these guys. I found some last week near our place, but didn't come away with anything. It looks like this guy was pretty cooperative with you. Nice detail in his feathers! There may be some noise issues, especially seen in the larger version, but at ISO 2000 that's understandable. Nice image, Jim!

Nice one Jim
We normally have the garden full of these but none this years at all yet.Maybe a little something in the back ground would !liven! things up a tad - just to reduce the cold feel a lttle.

I like the angled perch, nice pose and good feather detail. Would love to see one of these in person sometime, nice work.

Jim I like the pose on this one and it's red patch is showing nicely, looks good on that nice clean b/g.

Lovely species in a nice pose. If it were mine, I would be tempted to lighten it maybe a tat and denoise the BG. Other than that, a wonderful pose well captured ! Cheers, Hans

nice pose and comp, Jim. Good details in the head. I'm a little surprised that the feet and perch aren't sharper even with the wide aperture. I agree about doing a little noise reduction.

Nice capture here, but the noise and slight softness does detract a bit. Beautiful bird, however.
