A colorful night

Taken a few weeks ago on a camping trip. The aurora already started at 4 pm, and came back several times during the night. I have planned to take shots like these for a long time, the only thing missing is snow on the trees as well, but you can't have everything!

14 mm, f/4, 15 s, ISO 1600.

C&C welcome, large version included!

The top half of this is superb. The stars and aurora are enchanting. The bottom half looks like a bright sunny day and tends to make a person like myself feel this is unnatural. I might darken the bottom. Nice comp!

The combination of the aurora with the tree shadows is very unique - wonderful image!

I think the image is too bright. It almost looks like a daylight shot. I might darken the image a bit, at least the bottom part.

This is certainly different. Just curious, but was the sun still up? If so, then I'm OK with the brightness, even though it looks a little incongruous for an aurora image.

No, this was the full moon doing all the job with the lighting! I was a bit unsure about the brightness in the lower part, so now I know how others feel about it. Thanks for the comments!

Good job on standing still for that 15 second exposure. I agree than reducing the exposure would be more atmospheric.

I really love the way you dared to think outside the box with this one. Putting a person in the image -- the person as well as the tree shadows (great touch!) all point toward the aurora. Taking the picture earlier in the day than usual. You've done a masterful job of avoiding the usual cliches with this one. Congrats! :toast:
