Muddy Snipe

Common Snipe
D200
Sigma 100-300mm
800 ISO
250th @f9
Hide
Quite large crop. Usual PP
Taken late afternoon- low sun so I've tried to keep the effect
Maybe bit big in frame for some. I took most of the small spec highlights out but it lost the effect of the mud on the foot so I put some back in !

Super shot - I'm impressed you were able to get this image with the 100-300 and the fact that ti's a "large" crop doesn't really show, even at the higher ISO. Well done.

Thank Luke. Yes the reason I didn't use the 50-500 was because of the long barrel movement which skittish birds won't take. The 100 -300 is internal so it solves that problem. At one stage they were running around 3 feet in front of the hide.

Excellent comp. The DOF is about right—everything remains in focus except the tail. The harsh light is a problem, both for the heavy shadow and the specular highlights. I think some careful work on toning down the highlights (not removal) and bringing up the shadows might help and still leave the effect intact. As for being tight, It feels just fine to me. Ditto the large crop.

Very nice shot. I like the light, and I like the birds position.

Appreciated guys. in hindsight would have been good with the muddy feet in focus.
