Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted December 30, 2014206 views9 comments
This monarch and bee don't seem to have any problem sharing this dahlia. Image from 2012. It was unfortunately shot with insufficient room at the top and the tip of the monarch wing got cut off. I "constructed" the tip of the Monarch's wing and added canvas across the top. Other minor cloning, dodging, burning. D700, 150 macro, 1/800, f8, iso 1000. Comments, questions, and suggestions welcome. :wavey:

The addition or top repair is flawless here, Scott. The pluses of being able to make these type of "fixes" is one of the best things about post processing software such as PS. Items we may not have ever found salvageable in the past in many cases are totally recoverable and truly excellent finished products when completed right such as we see here.

The vibrancy and clarity of both the flower, Monarch, and the bee are a real draw to this image. Nice to see the cohabitation between the two critters too.

Hi Scott,

The repair work on the monarch's wingtip looks good. I like the diagonal comp and rich colors. There's also some nice details best viewed in the larger version :toast: ..................Jim

What a great collection of stunning colors, Scott. It's pretty amazing when a Monarch is the least colorful element in a shot. Your doctoring looks perfect. Very well done!

Would have had no idea you'd inserted the wing tip, Scott - great job on that !! Like the 3/4 poses of the ` little ' and ` large ' pair sharing the table against a gorgeous backdrop. The tiniest of nits would be the slightly distracting white streaks on the petals but the main subject looks perfect.
