The End

A shot from the last day of my final Yellowstone foray of the year. In the past I've had very little luck with mousing foxes, so it was nice to finally get one at close range. Unfortunately, it pounced at an angle, so I didn't land the classic profile view of the leaping predator. But the end result of the act was still pretty amusing.

Because the rear and tail work well as a graphic element, I chose the somewhat unconventional centered composition/crop for this one.

Conditions were very mild in the park the entire week during my trip. I would've preferred a cleaner canvas with about two more feet of snow on the ground, but temps were rather high (up to 63F one day!). Naturally, it really started dumping soon after I left, but it was still nice to fit in one last park trip this year.

Canon 1DX
Canon 500mm f/4 IS
ISO 800
1/1600th
f/7.1
+1 exp. comp.

Love it! I like the centered composition, though if you have enough pixels for a vertical crop that might also be interesting.

This made my day! I got a good chuckle; the fox, usually a graceful creature, goes all gung ho for the prey!

I love the image. Appreciating you would have preferred a clean canvas, I like it just the way you found it. Thanks for posting

Hey Max,

This one produced a big smile on my face! On a shot like this I don't think compositional issues are too critical in determining its success (i.e., the fox could be placed almost anywhere in the frame!).

Works for me - thanks for posting this one!

Abso-freakin-lutely love this one, Max!

Way to come up with a memorable and compelling image when the angle just wasn't working for the classic (and more common) capture. Love it.

Awesome image - I missed a chance at a fox pouncing earlier int he week so I know how hard it can be to time things. This is really unique
