Frosted Dawn

My Christmas photo was shot last week in the Canadian Rockies. Sustained temperatures below -15 gave rise to some cool hoar frost.

Canon 5DMkIII, 16-35mm, f18 for DOF, single exposure.

That's truly a lovely shot Kah Kit, Massive depth of field or focus stacking or both?. Really great shot, slight distortion to the crescent moon which I assume has migrated a few million metres with the length of chosen exposure but everything gorgeous.

Nice light on the mountainted and a beautiful mood. I find the comp a little tight on the top and bottom to let the moon breathe and perhaps bring a more cup lIke shape to the foreground snow, respectively

This is a wonderful shot, Kah Kit. Yes, the moon is a bit distorted but I'm fine with that. I love the light, color, textures and detail through out this image. Your large version is a real treat for me to look at. It really does give me the feeling of being there and I enjoy that very much. Merry Christmas!

From the detail on the hoar frost to the detail of the mountain, this is a superb photo. Well thought out and executed. Love the blues at this time of day/night.

Foreground is excellent. :toast: The moon generating a "sun" star is really nice, but for me, there's a bit too much empty space above crowfoot mountain. Minor nit tough, the image works very well overall. I admire you guys who go out there in the ice cold winter...!

The light and color in this image are simply phenomenal! I also like the strong composition given by the low point of view. My only minor comment is the blown-out Moon. I know that this works for some people, it happens to me often and I never know what to do with it, as I don't like it much. But the Moon is there and you need the long exposure, so what are you going to do about it? Great photograph!

Those crystals sure are a great anchor point. Excellent picture! Maybe a slight crop from the bottom, but other than that it is perfect.

Alberto, I don't bother about blowing out the moon. Just like the sun during the day, it's a specular highlight and no detail can be expected there.

The fg texture and patterns are just killer Kah, and of course the bg mountain with the glowing light on it is a sweet way to finish off such a wonderfully soothing image. I am not sure the moon is doing much for me either way if included or not, very minor stuff, but this is just beautiful work in photography!!!

Excellent work :toast:

This is a fine image. The foreground forms are beautifully intricate and of interest themselves, but then they mirror the shape of the mountain. The dark cold blue mood is perfect. I'm of two minds about the moon. It adds interest and defines the image as night, but I wonder if this would be better compositonally without it.

I was initially in two minds about the moon, which was closer to the edge of the frame. I added a small amount of canvas; ideally I would wish to place it a tiny bit closer to the peak. When I scroll up and see the image without the moon, I find it definitely the poorer with it absent.

Love the warm glow on Crowfoot Mountain Kah Kit. Crowfoot Mountain on Bow Lake looks so much more majestic cloaked in snow and ice and in the light you captured here. One of my favorite places when I visited the Canadian Rockies in the summer of 2009. Did you stay at the Num-Ti-Jah Lodge while there? A little pricey but certainly worth the view and convenience of just being there. I was always worried though that a grizzly would jump up out the brush since I was the only soul out there at ungodly hours in the early morning (family members had no intention of getting out there when I did).

First, nothing but respect for braving those bitter temps. Second, composition is superb I like the layers from the physical with the frost, mountains and the moon is a nice touch but also the layers of light going from the ground to the sky.

I'm speechless. Stellar comp and the moon lends an element of the cosmic to this clean and pristine image.

Very nicely put together, Kah Kit. I like your choice of small aperture not only for the depth but for the star effect on the moon.

I think this works very nicely. The light and the detail is especially nice. I wish the moon were a little closer to the peak, but that's minor. Nice work, Kah Kit.
