The Oracle

From earlier this summer at the Dollhouse in Canyonlands NP. Image made from a single exposure at 14mm, f/2.8, 25 seconds, ISO 3200. The monolith on the right was leaning only slightly, but the distortion at 14mm furthered the effect and I went with it. I used a warm xenon flashlight for light painting the terrain, but it proved challenging to get it relatively even, so I used a lot of selective dodging & burning to even out the effect. C&C much appreciated!

Your night images are really sweet, Jared. I dare not show this to my wife  Very clean for the ISO and the 25 second exposure. :toast:

Jared: I love these star shots. I tried something similar in Colorado but failed miserably and was too cold at the time to persist. Will try again in Zion in a few weeks. You've inspired me. Beautiful work. >=))>

No suggestions at all Jarred. A beautiful image. Reminds me of Whitman's Learn'd Astronomer poem.

Simple but effective. Good choice of light. Mind sharing which?

Thanks for the comments, gents. Pat, thanks for mentioning the Whitman poem; I hadn't remembered reading it so I looked it up and am now happily more educated.

Aaron, I used a Brinkman Dual Xenon light for the light painting here. It's no longer in production but people I respect recommend these as possible replacements:

Well done light on the rocks. Its easy to over do it, but I believe you have it right. Glad you explained the distortion. For me the right furthest rock does bother me a bit with its lean. But its just a minor issue on a great image.
