Nikon D7100, 12-24 @ 24mm, f/9, 3 exposures merged in Photomatix.

I was fortunate to spend the 2nd week of November in Zion NP. This icon has been photographed many, many times - my first attempt. Please tell me what you think.

I think that this is a nice comp, Sharron, and the light is just right. The image, particularly the mountain, is soft however and since I assume you were using a tripod due to the 3 exposures maybe there was some problem with the merge? Maybe you needed a smaller aperture than f/9? Just guessing....

Overall its a pleasing comp with nice arrangement of the foreground grasses and rocks. The lighting feels balanced and natural to my eye. I have to admit I sometimes groan when these iconic spots are posted but I know what I would do if visiting there.

Yes, the Watchman is iconic, but this view/comp is original, so kudos to you for that, Sharon. Nice light on the mountain.

Fantastic and original composition. Nice light and well processed, too. I do agree that the image appears a little bit soft.

What an original take on the Watchman Sharron,

I really like how the image transitions in layers, and of course the light is sweet on the rock face. I am not sure if you have anything with the watchman a bit sharper, but this is very nice as is. The processing looks very good too!

I think this is beautiful

You caught some fine light on "the icon" and I like your comp., which does a good job of balancing the watchman against the cluster of rocks in the foreground. You say you merged 3 exposures. Was that for dynamic range, dof, or a combination? As Dave points out, in the larger version, everything beyond the big gray rock in the foreground looks just a bit soft, while the sunlit side of the Watchman is very soft.

I like the composition and think it will look better in BW. Also it appears soft.

I like the layered look of this scene, Sharron. The exposure and colors are very good but I agree with others that the foreground is pretty sharp but the distant mountain peak is relatively soft. It could be the f/9 aperture or it could also be alignment issues of the 3 exposures during the merging process.
