October Watchman
by Jared Warren
A simple late afternoon image of the iconic Watchman, last week at Zion National Park. The cottonwoods should be really glowing this week (wish I was there now). Overall, I think the image is decent enough (conditions weren't remarkable) but I'm wondering what recommendations you'd have to make it better (processing in particular). 35mm, f/13, 1/10 sec, ISO 100. Most of the processing in PS was just selective dodging/burning and other minor adjustments with luminosity masks. Your thoughts?

I like the "non-iconic" vantage point. As Scott commented, a little more room at the bottom would have been a slight improvement to the composition. You know ... one thing that sometimes bugs me about photographs of The Watchman ... it often looks like it is leaning to the right, as if the camera is not level even when it is, and the image seems to benefit from a slight CCW rotation. I've noticed this with many of my photographs of The Watchman.
Gary.
My only question is: would it have been even better without cutting the top of the mountain's reflection?
I love the light on the watchman and cottonwoods, I believe these are cottonwoods. The foreground brings one into the image, and the lower vantage point works really well. I also would like to see some of the whites in the clouds down just a bit, but beautiful as is.
I just might have liked a bigger frame that 35mm, but I am not sure what you had to work with.
