Tropical Kingbird

by Richard Sandor

Gallery: AvianPosted November 3, 2014129 views8 comments
This species reaches into southernmost Arizona and Texas (where I was). I'm pretty sure it's not a Western Kingbird as it has plain brownish tall and lacks the black tail rimmed in white of the Western variety.
Taken with a D4 and 500 mm lens at f/8.0, 1/1600, ISO 1600 and -2/3ev. Richard

Very nice light and detail Richard, I agree it's not a Western but in South Texas it's more likely to be Couch's Kingbird, almost impossible to tell apart except by voice. :toast:

I'll second Nate's comments on the image and the lily species.

Sweet image, Richard. I like the little head tilt and that's a gorgeous bg.

Richard,
This is great the "inquisitive" head angle is the key here, wonderful light.
I have no idea regarding the ID

Lovely head tilt and sweet light, Richard. I think I'd agree with you on a Tropical as opposed to Couch's with those white wing bars, but as Nate says, the call is the only certain way to tell unless you have the bird in hand and can measure the bill length. Very good photo. either way.

Sweet portrait of this beauty Richard  Great light on the bird. I like the effects of the shadowed background.
