This is Jake, our little rescue dog. He has a tough time running with the great big dogs in the mountains but he does amazingly well and absolutely loves the great outdoors. I did this one a little differently and used a wider aperture to blur the background and put the focus on Jake. By the way, we have no idea what kind of mix he is so if anybody cares to make a guess we'd be happy to hear it

Gary - amazing. Gorgeous. I am LOVING your series of dogs in the Alaskan environment, and this is certainly one of the best of them. For what it's worth, when I saw the thumbnail I assumed this was a Karelian bear dog. Upon clicking through to the image, I thought it must have something else in it, and then read your comments so now I'm puzzled too!

Jake's a great-looking dog and you sure showed him off wonderfully here. Great image!

Jake is looking on top of the world. Great sense of the place and the accomplishment. Cool image.

Even before the description showed up, I was sure this was a Gary Minish shot. There's something about how you place your dogs (and maybe the landscape, but there are other mountains in the world). This is another fine pose that shows the dog beautifully in a great landscape.

Mark, thank you for the kind comments! All I do is take the dogs on long walks up in the mountains and look for opportunities to capture them in natural poses and behaviors. Since my primary photography focus is landscapes, I go out of my way to compose a good landscape as a backdrop whenever I can. Since I'm not positioning the dogs, I have to run all over the place and put myself in some interesting situations to get the best view behind them. The dogs are not even close to static so I have to be fast and I usually end up getting more exercise than they do  Needless to say, handheld shots are the only option which makes it a little more difficult than normal landscape photography. In a couple of my online galleries I have a special category called "Dogs in Landscapes" that feature a lot of past and present furry family members in natural scenes.

One can tell you put a lot of time into these photos Gary. Very nice work!!! Jake looks substantially smaller than Eli and Reina, so I'm going to vote for some Jack Russell mixed into in this guy, maybe with a Boston Terrier. A few years back, myself and a bunch of coworkers were curious about our rescues. We all sent swabs from our respective pooches to a company out in Toronto called "DNA My Dog". A novelty and conversation prank... but the results actually made sense
