Green Heron

Not a very nice bg, I know, but I liked the raised crest and there wasn't much choice about the bg. This was taken at Ridgefield NWR and they had problems with the underground power system for the pumps that keep the ponds full in the summer, so they had to let them do their own thing this summer. The bg is the bed of what is normally one of the larger ponds, which also increased the steepness of the angle. However, I don't encounter enough of these to pass one up. In this case I did some blurring of the upper half of the bg and slightly desaturated the bg layer.

1D4, 500mm f4 ISL +1.4TC, balanced on foam insulation on truck window. f6.3, 1/160, iso 500, pattern metering and aperture priority. Processed in LR5 + CS6. Cropped to 9.4MP from the original 16. Taken September 5th at 7:23 am (light was just starting to reach the lake bed).

Your comments are always appreciated.

Thanks for looking,

Pretty little bird, Dennis. BG issue not a problem to me. Don't see anyway around that. You got some nice light on the bird which shows off the plumage very nicely and helps with the detail. It gave you a good pose and the raised crest is a definite plus. Nice comp and treatment of the colors, etc.

The raised crest is very cool. I think you did the best you could with the messy setting, but it's still a bit distracting. Ironic, because it's classic habitat.

Good pose, detail, and the raised crest makes the image more interesting. This is exactly the habitat I see them using in late summer as they work the weedy shallows for frogs and minnows, so it is an appropriate background if somewhat busy.

Dennis I don,t have a problem with the bg apart from the stump in front of the bird, in fact I like the water and the weed which shows it's habitat very well. Raised crest on the bird top's off a very nice image for me.
