It won't be long before these magnificent little birds head south from here for the winter. Still enjoying them while they are here. This beautiful Female Rufous provided a nice image from this morning.

Larger Version provided for a critical view

Canon 5D Mark III
100mm f/2.8 Macro
1/200 @ f/13
ISO 200

3 - 430 EX II flashes for the hummer, and 1 for the background.

Very nice Keith. Great detail in the hummer and the lighting is awesome. It's OK...if you send them my way I will entertain them for a bit.

Beautiful. Love the DOF and a colorful background. I have never seen a 100mm macro used for hummers before. Very cool.

So delicate! The flower and the hummingbird. Not sure if it was intentional but the way the BG highlights the subjects is quite nice. :toast:

Lovely, Keith. Perfect flash setup. I'm a bit curious as to why you use a 100 mm. I know hummingbirds acclimatize to gear pretty readily, but it seems like you'd have to be set up awfully close.

Dennis: I set up exactly where I want the hummer to be. If it doesn't come to the exact spot on the flower, I don't shoot. I'm back 20 yards or so using a radio release for the camera. The macro gives me a nice perspective and great sharpness. The hummers come back to the flower within a couple of minutes of me setting up and moving away. They could care less about the camera.

Good grief, Keith...you keep outdoing yourself on hummer shots. Stunning. Great execution on a well-planned image, fantastic comp, techs and processing, and spellbinding result.
