Barn Owl

This is from our latest batch of Barn Owl fledglings. I had one night where they came out early enough to take a stab at some high iso shots and they were still pretty young and weren't spending much time away from the nest box. Two of them were reasonably cooperative but I didn't have the light to get both in focus at once.

5Diii, 500mm f4 ISL + 1.4TC, Jobu Gimbal on RRS legs, f5.6, 1/50, iso 3200 (I used 6400 later, but the noise got pretty difficult to handle), -1/3 stop exposure compensation (I actually had to add exposure in post processing, but at least this kept my shutter speed at a half-way reasonable value)aperture priority, pattern metering. Increased exposure in LR5 and did cropping, noise reduction, sharpening and minor tuning in CS6. Cropped to 13.4MP from the original 21. The perch is the roof of the nest box. Taken on our property on July 17th at 9:16 pm.

Your comments are very much appreciated.

Thanks for looking,

Hi Dennis, nice capture killer BKG.

I would suggest going back into the RAW and adjusting the HSL. In the Hue, RED, Orange, Purple & Magenta, Canon seem to chuck in a lot of the Purple/Magenta. Then pull back the Blue in saturation, I think you will be surprised in what happens, the biggest will be regarding the Blue. Just try to get an even spread across the Histogram in the RAW, the better the exposure the less noise you will see, as it's easier to darken an image than lighten for obvious reasons. Look forward to more.

Dennis this is a perfect comp and background. I'm always envious of owl shots, because ...I don't have any. :frown:
I think it looks great to me as posted. The only tiny nit I would have is the perch. But hey, it is what it is. It would be interesting to see it with Mr. Kaluski's suggestions to compare. Great shot!

Pretty decent shot for 1/50s Dennis. I'm also interested with what you find of Steve's color correction advice, I've received some tips from him which were very insightful and enormously helpful. :toast:

Perfectly composed. I don't have a problem with the perch. After all, it is a barn owl. I do think there is a bit of blue cast here.

I like this Dennis, very nice presentation under the shooting conditions you had. I don't notice any problems with blue cast on my monitors.
Well done . . . :toast:

Thanks, folks. I'll have to try adjusting the color balance.

I like the head turn in this one Dennis and nice job getting the sharpness you have in it at 1/50. Not real keen on the perch, but it wasn't your choice, so nothing you can do about it except hope for a better perch next time.
