House on Fire

Inspired by some of the fine images of Kane Engelbert of Puebloan ruins, I decided to visit a couple well-known locations in the Cedar Mesa area of southern UT while I was down there last week visiting extended family. This location is typically photographed in the late morning when the light reflected off the far canyon wall lends a nice glow to the "fiery" ceiling in the rock alcove, but I got there in the evening and decided to see what it would look like at night with light painting using a flash unit and flashlight with a diffuser and a couple flash gels.

I experimented with a few different variations of ISO, exposure length, and lighting, and this one (f/8, 30 sec, ISO 800) ended up working out OK. Used TK masks and actions, plus selective dodging/burning and subtle selective color adjustments in PS.

Your C&C is always appreciated!

Really interesting shot Jared, the rock above brings to mind a huge wave crashing over the ruins. I don't really have any suggestions, I think the exposure is great and the brightness of the "window" looks great to me, like there's someone still living inside.

This is really cool, Jared. I like the different take on the usual shot from here. Gives it a much more mysterious feel. :toast:

Stunning - fiery colours and excellent perspective on the window - congrats on the WP.
