Nikon D700 F16 1/80 ISO 200 with a little fill flash. Nikon 16-35 lens at 35mm.

Darkened the background to make the flower pop. Comments and critiques please. I want to improve my flora images and I learn from every post. Thanks

Andrew - The spot lighting like effect looks really cool. The Flash could have been more diffused to prevent the glare from the petals.

The flower is past prime, if you have access to these on a continuous basis, try shooting again with a fresher specimen.

Nice comp and colors. The flower stands out very well against the dark green bg. Nicely done!

Andrew: I like how you have made the flower stand out against the BG. The proportion of flower to frame looks real good to me as well. Nicely done. >=))>

I like how you used the background lines of the greenery to lead directly to the flower.

Well composed as far as leading lines and placement of the flower. As a matter of personal taste, some diffusion on the fill flash would have helped. The darkened BG is a bit too darkened for me.

The Bird of Paradise is beautiful even when is declining.
You ask a suggestion: I would have exposed Spot on the highest light of the flower so the flower would have no spots blown up and the shadowy BG would becomes very dark already in the shot.
Take care.
