Monsoon Plume

After the comments on my last two posts I realized I probably was being a little timid with the skies. The recommendations were right. I darkened the skies in both and boosted contrast a bit and they look much better. Thanks.

I tried to apply some of what I learned here. Took the clouds darker and added more contrast than I normally would. This was an evening of rapidly changing conditions and there was a fearsomeness in both the clouds and the thunder and lightening. Despite the storm overhead, the sunset on the horizon was clear. So overall some nice conditions for clouds.

Recommendations are always useful and considered. No picture is finished until NPN has its say.

Amazing sky to say the least, beautiful patterns with very nice detail. I especially like the composition and colors, works beautifully in my opinion. Excellent work Tony.

Possibly one of the most dramatic and complex sky images I've ever seen. You must have been in total awe to see such a site! Excellent image :toast:

Man! That's some great cloud action! Looks great. I would like to see just a bit more of the canyon wall, but other than that, I like this a lot.

Beautiful skyscape Tony, if this were mine I might reduce the contrast in the lower half of the sky, just to many "sharp" edges there, other than that this looks great.

Stunning image Tony! The sky looks great, my only suggestion might be to back off the saturation of the canyon walls on the bottom a bit. Very nice comp as well, I bet it would look good printed large. :toast:

Very cool, Tony. Love the strip of ground to anchor this amazing sky. The only suggestion I would have is to dial back on the blues slightly on the right side. They look a little dreamy at least on the Ipad. Other than that........Killer!

Amazing tower of color and texture. Maybe a little more ground would help balance the sky portion. Appears to be a little bit of a halo at the transition of ground to cloud that caught my eye. Also, some of the shadow areas of the clouds - especially the magenta areas see a little grainy. Wouldn't have thought that would be the case with ISO 100 and a short shutter speed. Maybe the shadows were brought up a bit  A serious cloud scape. We just don't get these type of conditions out east. Not sure how you handle the heat out west in the summer, but the storms look tremendous.

This is an awesome sky scape, Tony! The strip of canyon makes a fine anchor and it shows especially well in the larger version. I can immerse myself in the details in that cloud on the right for a long time. As a minor nit, I feel like the blues in the ul quarter are a bit too saturated.

It can't get more dramatic than this! Just wonderful..you've captured quite a show and all its vividness and color bring it to the viewer.

Geez, Tony, I spend all day at work dealing with the 'plume' and you have to make me endure more on my time off?! C'mon, man.
OK, I have a lot of experience with clouds. I also have strong opinions about their photos, which means you can ignore my rant, but i'll rant regardless. One of my favorite storm photogs has been overdoing the contrast on his shots for months now, but if I said anything critical about his photos his legions of rabid fans would lynch me in effigy. Fortunately, you don't have a humongous FB/500px following, so I can be up front with you. I really love your expansive vertical comp. I might pull back the cyan (more to blue) a bit. The contrast is the tricky part. You need definition, but too much and it no longer looks like clouds. Study how the clouds look to your eye, that's the key IMO. Then, try to reproduce what you see. Some folks want to create a painting--but what painting can capture the grandeur of a sky like this? Might as well go for a photo, IMO. This is pretty close, just needs some slight tweaks. You'll get there, I'm confident of that. :wavey:

Amazing clouds! I can see where Stan is coming from on the contrast. For me, it does seem a tad heavy here. Something between this and the sky of the prior images would probably hit my sweet spot.

Wow, incredible image Tony. The color palate reminds me of a Georia O'Keeffe painting.
