Raining Color

After an amazing light and color show in the Lamar Valley a couple weeks ago, I was relaxing in the sage and thinking about all the images i'd gotten, when I looked to the north and saw that the sun had found another small gap in the clouds near the horizon and lit up the sky and sheets of rain. I wanted to shoot the scene badly, but there was nothing in the foreground to compliment the sky until three buffalo walked slowly into the scene. I'm attaching one of the raw files to help with C&C of the processing.

Canon 5d Mark iii, 70-200mm f/4 lens, 1/60 sec at f/11, ISO 250, 2 images stitched with PTGui

A nice pastoral Thomas. I like the mood of it very much. I think an alternative would have been to leave the sky intact and crop up from the bottom to just below the animals. I like it as posted however.

Gotta love the Lamar Valley. One of my favorite places. This is great from strictly a landscape shot. The bison put it over the top.

Very nice, Thomas. The pano treatment works very well. I love the sky, and the virga is sweet. The Bison are an added bonus.

Awesome clouds. Just feels like the ground should maybe pick up more of this color. It seems to be neutral or even cool by comparison.

While the light is really nice this scene would have been lifeless without those Bison, great job incorporating them into the scene for a compelling photograph. How long are you in Yellowstone for?

Thanks for the comments. Tony, the foreground has been bothering me and I couldn't quite tell why, but I think you nailed it, the disconnect between sky and foreground color, so I'll work on it. Zach, I'll be at the West Yellowstone jump base through mid-October, but only sporadically as fire season has suddenly come to life. I've been at the Redmond base for the last two weeks but I think we're heading home tomorrow. It would be fun to meet up and go out shooting sometime.

Thomas, send me an email when you've got some free time and maybe we can get out and do some shooting in the park this summer
