The Longest Day
by Harry Lichtman
I spent the evening and the morning of the summer solstice atop Mount Carrigain in NH's White Mountains. Didn't feel like summer at 35 degrees and 40 MPH winds. The noise of wind kept me awake more than the temps. and proved to be the most challenging in getting sharp images. I used the image stab. feature of my lens at times even when using a tripod to help counter the effects of the wind. This vantage point allows a view of 360 degrees into 3 of NH's designated Wilderness Areas, the largest being the Pemigewasset, which you can see here. Franconia Ridge is in the distance, but not the familiar perspective. The colorful light was so intense during sunrise that the FG trees looked like fall larch. Some of the shaded trees are more representative of the tree's later day tones. I reduced some of the red in the image during RAW processing as it seemed too over-top from what I remembered.
Single exposure, 5DII, 24-105L, f9.5, ISO 400, 1/30 sec.
