Dark Shadows

by Howard Cheek

Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted July 9, 2014114 views5 comments
Made this morning in the dark recesses of a tomato plant, with some filtered light breaking through. Shot hand-held (something I rarely do with macro).
I was actually shooting another larger Garden Spider in front of me (tripod), when I spotted this smaller/younger version to my right. An insect had just hit its web, and here you see the prey newly wrapped.

When they eat they don't.. they drink their prey. First they wrap the prey, then bite & inject a substance that emulsifies.
As the prey converts, the white wrap turns dark.. then it's consumed.
F/16, 1/250th, ISO 800, 1D M3, Sigma 150mm f/2.8 with fill.

Fine look at this spider with its new catch, Howard. The lighting on the spider and web are great.

Impressive macro of this spider/prey even if they are big in Texas. Even more impressed with such good sharpness considering this was hh, Howard. I like the excellent view of the victim. Great shot. :toast:
