Here's another from one of the ghost forests in Yosemite Valley. This is Incense Cedar bark. There was very little color, unlike Ponderosa Pine bark, so my main intent was to see what I could do with texture.

Nikon D-7100
18-140mm @ 38mm
f-11 @ 1s, ISO 100
TK's Luminosity Masks
May 2014

Please see the large version. Thanks.

Preston, the textures show nicely and the tiny bits of color peeking through are the perfect complement to all the darkness.

Your control of subtle contrast has brought out the textures nicely.

Reminds me of lava flows I've seen Preston. I like the darkness with the bits of color coming through. It's a strong image for my tastes and a fine abstract. Since I'm not seeing any side shadows I'm assuming the light was diffuse or straight on so must have been your processing that brought out this kind of detail. I like the image.

Very nice abstract, Preston. I enjoyed studying the bark and those hints of orange are sweet. The retired woodworker in me really wants to see what is under that bark.

Preston: One could look at the larger version for a long time and just savor the textures and details. The tiny bits of color are icing on a very nice cake. 2 thumbs up! >=))>

This looks great, Preston. Lovely textures, and I like the thin bands of color peeking through.

The little bit of orange / red stripes add an other dimension to this to this textured master piece Preston. The knots in the wood give this a Picasso like look to it. Excellent abstract.

Texture is great, Preston, with good contrast to bring it out. The reds below the black make this look like magma.

Man, Preston, this is excellent. You definitely made this a stunning study in texture, and the reds glowing through the grays really does give this a volcanic feel. I might consider desating the reds in the lower right hand corner as that area seems to draw the eye away from the rest of the image, somewhat. That or cropping a smidgeon off the right hand side. But no one else has mentioned that, so I'm probably being too picky. Either way, :toast:

Another excellent image from this burn area. Great colors, textures and lines. Fantastic to see dead wood shooting dead wood. Beautiful image, Preston.

Preston, this is extremely nice for knowing what it is or even on the level of being seen as an abstract. Your edge to edge coverage has perfect DOF allowing us to take in the undulation of the bark without OOF portions. The red streaks help define some of the depth to the scene also. A very good find here.

I'd say you did well, Preston. The hints of orange contrast nicely with the overall dark done. And the detailed texture is mesmerizing. Well-done!
