Parakeet Auklets

by Jim DeWitt

Canon 1D-X, 500mm f4, lying on ground
f14, 1/250, ISO1000

Ridgewall Rookery, St. Paul Island, Pribilofs. Parakeets seemed to be the most common auklet on the island, at least the parts we were able to visit. I chose the composition to try to emphasize the vertical space, the vastness of the ocean and the tiny birds.

75% of full frame. Selective sharpening to birds.

C & C, please. Thanks for looking.

You've captured some great birds on this trip Jim. Nice perspective to show habitat and the (algae ?) covered perch adds a nice touch of color.

Really cool habitat shot - wish that the angle was a bit lower but that is likely impossible. Love the eye contact you are getting

Excellent composition, Jim. Given your description, you accomplished exactly what you set out to achieve. The larger image works really well since the eyes really pop there.

Really like this image Jim. Great job on stopping down to f/14 to get everything sharp. Love the techs here as well. I do like it as posted, but found myself wondering if you tried a vertical crop for comparison? I only ask because you mention you wanted to emphasize the vertical cliff and I am wondering if a vertical crop would make an even larger impact? I personally am not sure which I would like more unless I saw them side by side.
