I made this image while in south Texas last weekend at the Santa Clara Ranch. This was my send time there and we were not very lucky wight he light. Out of 4 days shooting we had light for a single afternoon. Aside form three 5-10 minutes of sun breaking through the clouds the other three days, we were overcast and rainy the entire time. :frown:
BUT, the birds fortunately didn't care. I was also lucky enough to get a 1DX on loan form Canon...I needed it because I was shooting ISO 3200-6400 for about 70% of the trip.

1DX
500mm f/4
1.4 TC
1/2000 at f/6.3
ISO 1600

Beautiful image, Kurt. Rainy days can make for some nice images, though it's very nice to do the shooting from a nice dry blind.

Having one big problem here Kurt..
Can't decide which I like best, the bird or the setting here
Don't think I get this one up in Central Texas, sure wish I did because it's a beauty.
The weather's about the same here right now, it's that time of year.
Excellent work, and ISO 1600 on the 1DX looks fab:wavey:

Excellent shot of a bird I find very hard to get close to in my area. Way to go.

Very cute photo. Thanks to the soft light the bird's plumage is rendered incredibly well, with great feather detail, and it's also lovely and sharp. I particularly like the differential focus, with the bird standing out against well blurred background. Excellent bird photo!!! Well done Kurt. :toast:
P.s. Many thanks for your excellent comment to my photo. I appreciate it very much. I'm not avian photographer. I just cam to that biotope to take some photos of it, the Heron was just there walking out of the photo, I just took the opportunity and made one shot. I agree with your comment, but I was not able to change the composition, unless I "Photoshop" it, and this is not my style. Have a very nice weekend.

Kurt,
Whilst the weather and light may not have been the best, I think this is a perfect example of what can be done with "soft light". :toast: :toast:
