THE GREY
by Gary Gulash
Borrowed the title from the Hollywood blockbuster movie, an "interesting" piece of fiction if you haven't seen it yet. Photographed this Grey Wolf in Alberta Rockies.
D700 (had the D4 on another lens), 200-400 VR @ 280, 500 iso. f5, 1/3200, +0.3 EV, 72% of original. Spectacular conditions, good light about 10 am after a fresh snowfall the night before.

14 commentsVery nice to see these wolves out in the wilderness. My first and only sighting I had with a wolf, was in Banff National Park a few years ago, between Banff and Lake Louise, this lone wolf was following closely (right on its heals) to what looked like an injured Moose. It had a visible tear to its hind quarters where you could see raw flesh (maybe a winter injury or a previous attack). The wolf was in no hurry.... just tiring is prey out. I'm sure the pack was not to far back. It was pretty exciting to see, and something I will not forget.
Very nice photo! Brought back memories.

Still looking for my first wolf. I have not encountered one (yet) in Yellowstone or Teton NP, which are the only places I have been with wolves and they are certainly one of my favorite animals. This shot is gorgeous in every way. Love the techs on this, the comp, etc. Really nice work on this.
Sweet One!
Well done to be prepared for this encounter. Image is sharp and good sense of action with the raised leg in the deep snow!
