Sunrise at Upper Cathedral Valley, Capitol Reef National Park. What an amazing place. The isolation really adds to the mystique of this area. High winds, generally overcast skies, and some snow flurries were obstacles during my short visit, but I was blessed with one amazing sunrise. I hope this image does it justice. It's a 3-exposure blend. Please let me know what you'd do to improve it if it were your image. Thanks!

I like the snow especially and the lovely variation it brings to an oft shot scene, a couple of the clouds in the middle right are hot, and maybe you could bring them back. All in all, well seen Jared

This is a view I don't remember seeing before! I love the comp, and the conditions are great as well! I really have no nits, but if I were wanting something, it would be a little more highlite control in the brightest areas only. On a subjective note, a little more color would work for my tastes too! Excellent!

Jared,

I don't know what I would do to improve it. I presume you've blended at least exposures for the sky and ground. The blending looks good; the biggest issue I'm seeing is that direction of light is coming from behind the Cathedrals, but the lighting on the Cathedrals looks like it's coming from the front/left. That's what I'm seeing... but I don't know what you'd do about it.

If you're looking for a way to get a little more color in the lightest areas of the sky, try duplicating the sky layer and setting it to the "multiply" setting. It takes a light touch, and it's easy to overdo -- so be careful -- but when it works, it can have impressive results.

Cheers,
Mark.

I like this a lot, Jared. Congratulations on getting back there for a sunrise. I think the blend looks really good, something I don't do much of, but learning. I think the whole purpose of the blend is to even the exposure and provide detail in shadow and highlight and I think you've accomplished that nicely. Kinda gives it a very surreal look.without the hdr fantasy vibe. The large view is exceptional and I could suggest nothing more to improve it.

Here's a repost with a (hopefully) subtle color boost and slight glow added. Maybe I could go further; I'm always afraid of overdoing it.

Thanks for showing this image. It may be an iconic view, but it's the first I've seen. I like it a lot. It a very impressive geological scene that has interesting light illuminate it, and the weather in the form of the clouds and snow enhancing it even more. I think you did real well with your exposure and I certainly won't argue with how you composed. Definitely a thumbs up.

I think your repost is spot on Jared. The shadow detail in the repost looks more natural to me (but then again, I grew up with film). I also like the increased contras and richer color.

The first image is very nice, but the second image really pops. I like the composition and the little extra light on the main subject and in the sky are great.

I like the sky in the second post better, not sure about the glow on the foreground though, maybe dial it back a notch. The composition looks good and the larger version is a treat to view.

I prefer the OP as I think the muted tones look more placing to me.
Maybe just a tad brighter with the foreground.
Killer Comp and scene in general and I love the sky.

This is a tough shot because of the extreme contrast, but you've done a fantastic job. I've studied both the original and the repost, and it's a tough call for me. The original looks great as a large version, but it does seem a bit subdued at the small size. I think this is just what happens when the exact same image is viewed at high res versus low res. I wonder if the reworked version might feel a bit over saturated when viewed at full res? It's certainly not over the top at all, but when I view the original at high res, it feels very real, and I appreciate that.

I like the first image because Im concerned about slight halowing with bigger prints with the added contrast of the second.

Wonderful composition Jared, and a nice sky to back up the scene. I prefer the second, but not by much. How was the road in there? I've heard it can be a tough spot to get to at times.

Beautiful. ALMOST visited this area for the first time last week, but the forecast wasn't right. This image most definitely is inspiration to make that trip happen.

Thanks for the comments and helpful feedback. John, the roads weren't bad. The area had seen some rain recently but looked like roads were drier than they had been a week or so before (based on dried vehicle tracks/depressions in the road). Wouldn't want to get stuck back there; there were no signs of other humans or vehicles anywhere on the 50 mile backcountry loop.
