Steven: I see you had to deal with a bright sunny day....not ideal for flower photography. I suggest trying to shade the flowers with something to diffuse the light and soften the shadows caused by the direct sun. Or, wait for a time when the sun does not shine directly on the flowers.
Looks like a nice rose bush with good photographic possibilities.
