The Three Amigos

This is without question my favorite photograph from my last five month photographing trip to the States. The previous evening conditions had been horrendous with heavy rain and lightning so I wasn't confident that I would get a shot at all. In this image the sky to the west looks quite clear but from the east it was still cloudy. I felt sure the sun would be hidden in the clouds, however, for a few moments it lit the hoodoo before disappearing from view for the rest of the day.

Terrific photo, Andrew. I really like the composition with the wonderful red formation leading back to the hoodoos. :toast: Can you share the location of this formation?. Chet

Wonderful image, Andrew! Really nice comp and I love the light and color. Such interesting shapes and lines here. That sky made a perfect back drop for this scene. :toast:

Sorry if this was a well known location I'd be happy to share but this one must remain a secret for as long as possible.

Very nice, Andrew. Great formation, light, and comp. I can see why this might be your favorite. I'd have a had time picking this one over the shot of the amber room with John. Great work.

Fantastic pattern in the stones on the foreground, and you utilized it very well with this comp. Great!

Great image shot at the right time of the day Andrew. I like the warm colours and composition with the texture in the rock in the foreground. Well done!

Excellent image from what is easily one of the most interesting spots in the SW. Love it! :toast: :toast: :toast:

Nicely composed Andrew. I like how the white marks on the foreground rocks curve and lead into the rear spires. I wonder about lightening the shady spot on the rear-most set of spires. I need to make it out there some time this spring.

Doug you know I considered lightening that shady spot but I figured I'd leave it. I think it helps to distinguish this as a sunrise shot. There's actually a fraction too much light on the foreground rock, I had visualised the foreground rock being in shadow. So I wanted to leave those shaded rocks in the back alone.

Fascinating color difference between the foreground and the rocks behind. It all plays well together. You might play with warming the sky a little. I sometimes find that the earth elements take on much more of the late light than the distant sky, and playing with the sky might add?

John I've had two other guys both highly skilled in processing try their hand at this image. Both of them created a more vivid sky, however, I thought my version better reflected what the sky looked like at the time. I'm sure as I progress with my processing skills I might think differently but for now I'm reasonably happy with this.

Very, very nice. I like your foreground and background balance. It reminds me of a place that I visited just last November - Moenave Sandstone, if I'm not mistaken...
