Hope you had a long lens. I wouldn't want to run into one of these just holding a small camera with a wide angle lens. The image showcases your subject nicely and the environment surrounding him. There seems to be a grainy effect over the image which reduces the sharpness which might have been done in post processing. Thanks for posting.

Hi Addison and welcome to NPN and the Wildlife Gallery! I clicked through to this one right away, in part because I'm excited to be returning to Florida next week and bringing my two photographer daughters with me...one of whom has never seen a gator in the wild (something I hope to correct in short order!).

This is a great look on this gator and I LOVE all the algae or whatever flora is all over him and the surface of the water. I think what Patricia is referring to as a grainy look is possibly just highly sharpened fine detail that is present throughout the image. I am wondering if you formatted this picture and sharpened it at 720px or a larger size and relied on the website to downsize...I've recently started just uploading the 1200px "larger version" file and taking advantage of NPN's downsizing for the main post, but generally speaking you can achieve better results sharpening for specific output, and images with fine detail throughout like this can benefit from this.

Speaking of the image, you did a great job with what seems to be fairly harsh midday(?) light, and I love the eye and the space you've left in front of him to "move into."

It's up to you, but if you choose to indicate your settings in your post, that can help some of the members here to make suggestions (or give props on your choice of settings).

Anyway, nice image of a great-looking gator. Looking forward to seeing more from you in the future!

I just re-sized it through Lightroom 5 and tried sharpening it for screen viewing. The original RAW is 5900 x 3600. One thing I tend to overdue is the vibrant setting which I've noticed can cause particles to show up. I'm still learning how to process photos correctly. Thinks for all of the tips however!

Hi Addison,

And here's another welcome to the NPN Wildlife Gallery. Nice first post - hoping to see more from you soon.

John covered much of what I was thinking about this shot, so I won't repeat it. On the re-post - it seems to have gone darker as well - which is odd if all you did was re-size it and sharpen it differently. Due to this I think I prefer the original post over the re-post.

Cheers - and thanks for sharing this one.
