Kapaa Shooting Star

by Daniel Finchum

Took this about a month ago and as I was looking over this set on this rainy day, I noticed the shooting star. I have three pictures which show its progression downward. I was pretty surprised and amazed.

Two exposures for sky and sea.
Canon 5DM3
Lots of dodging and burning.

Top notch, Daniel. I thought it was a jet trail before I read your description . The foreground cobbles, light , water action, and sky are pretty awesome. Great work. :toast:

A beautiful sunset/seascape, although the shooting star I would have cloned out. :toast:

Yeah you know as much as it's cool knowing it's a shooting star it does look like a jet trail. I'd be inclined to clone it out.

Just a beautiful all the way around. Composition, color, light are all great. But, that is a jet not a shooting start. I have never seen a shooting star with double trails. I too would clone it out. Even if it was a shooting star it is distracting for the beautiful image you produced.

I'm concerned that the shooting star might come back to bite you. What I mean is this: You've got a superbly captured and processed image of a beautiful sunset, nice wave action, and well chosen foreground. This is an image that will capture the eyes in a heartbeat. Then there's that little sliver of a streak in the sky - Oh!! it's a shooting star. How neat! Hey everyone - check out this shooting star. How cool is that!!??...Blah, blah, blah.
My point, somewhat exaggerated, is that the shooting star will steal the show, and no one will notice the amazing sunset image you've crafted.
I remember watching a terrific 300 member high school marching band once. On the side line they placed a little 5 year old majorette. She was lovely, twirling her little baton in her sequenced tutu. After the show, the only comments I heard from folks around me was how cute the child was. No one paid any attention to the splendid 300 musicians on the field, precision marching, and playing their hearts out.
I noticed that even YOU made more comments about the shooting star in your description than you did about the actual image. Maybe consider two versions of this image - with & without the shooting star. I just don't want to see the rest of this beautiful image having to take a backseat to that little streak in the sky.
One more thing - is it possible that the horizon is leaning a little to the right? It does seem so to me.

Thanks for the comments everyone and you're correct I probably should've cloned whatever that little white streak is out. I'm just a kid at heart and thought it was pretty cool. If it does go to print you won't see it there.

This is a lovely sunset, Daniel. The wave action and the cobbles at the bottom add a lot of interest to the foreground. Well seen and captured. Definitely loose the jet contrail (double tails).

This has a nice depth to it along with some nice wave action and a gorgeous sunset, Daniel. It is all up to you of course, but like others have already mentioned, I too feel as though you do not need the shooting star with all of the other wonderful stuff in the scene. Either way this is nicely done.

I see the foreground mimicking the clouds, and I love it. Great comp, colors and such beautiful light. Thanks for sharing :)
