Water rushes around the photographer one morning at Seal Rocks State Park. The morning color had faded but the sun had yet to reach me, so I was walking around in chest waders in the deepening waves, looking for an interesting composition when I found this gap that the foam-filled water rushed through as each wave receded.

By the time I got this image and decided to retreat to shore, the fairly powerful waves were almost waist high and it was becoming really difficult to myself and my tripod steady. The color was fairly flat in the scene and I like the lines of brightness, so I think it works better in B&W. C & C much appreciated, and I'm specifically interested if it appears too dark.

Super image to me Thomas. The large version is so much better for detail. Really great motion in the water and wonderful composition. The darkness adds lots of drama IMO. Only nit and I'm not sure why is the round dark area in the centre of the sky. Maybe some one else will chime in on that. Great image. :toast:

Thanks Bill, the center of the sky was darker than the rest because it was cloud-free, but I did accentuate that darkness a bit as I thought it matched up better with the dark areas of the foreground. I'll be curious to see what others think.

Very dynamic comp, Thomas. I think that moving back towards the shore was the right choice, as it emphasizes some very interesting leading lines with the receding water. Nice choice for a B&W, and very good work.

This works very well in black and White, Thomas. There is a good tonal range and enough detail in the black, at least in the foreground rocks. The onl nit I have is the strong foreground flow, which tends to overwhelm the rest of the photo. If this were mine, I would try a 4:5 crop, cropping from the bottom, or whatever would place the horizon on the top third line.

Those leading lines certainly created some very nice depth to this image, Thomas. The details show up much better in the large version and great call on the B&W conversion.

Surreal look to this and a ton of depth.
I would highlight the few small clouds in the center to break up the dark spot in the sky.
I also think a crop off the bottom so both outside strips exit the bottom corners
Would look good to me.
A very nice artful photograph.

This really comes together nicely! The composition is wonderful, and the drama pulled out by the BW is excellent.

Nice movement and "flow" both literal and visual. Fine tones throughout as well. Nicely done.

Quite like the fact how you used leading lines in this image. B&H works well here.
