Ice Whelks

When the water level in streams rises and falls, the icecycles often take on so crazy shapes. I thought these looked like whelk shells.

Canon 5D3; Sigma 150 macro
1/4 sec. @ f/18; ISO 320

The Sun went down as I was setting up my tripod to shoot this from right down on the the surface of the ice, so I propped up a small LED flashlight about where the Sun was shining. It did a fairly good job of duplicating the light.

Please check out the details in the larger version.

Fascinating forms Wayne. They work great as a trio. This would look cool inverted too  .

Verry cool formations! I love the soft frills of ice on the edges. Beautiful texture and detail, especially on the highlights

I like this image a lot Wayne. The sculptural ice pieces, set against the dark background work very well. Great work. Chet

One could almost hear a pin drop here on NPN lately...

Amazing picture. The detail is stunning (especially in the large version), and the light is great. I honestly would have never guess there was any artificial lighting used here, as everything appears very natural (and it sounds like there was still a good amount of natural light still illuminating the landscape, albeit not directly). Very nice capture...

Yes, these do look like whelk shells. Excellent detail, lighting (even if it was artificial but does look perfectly natural), and comp. Beautiful intimate detail image, Wayne! :toast:

Wow I love this, my work seems to take me to warm places so I yearn to get out to the ice again. Congratulations this is excellent.
